Weekend News

I hope everyone had a great weekend. My hubby had to work Friday night which is our normal "date night". We don't go out(no babysitter) and stay at home and watch a movie together and catch up on the weeks events.

This Friday instead of watching a movie alone I thought I'd amuse myself another way. I tried something I've been "dyeing" to do for a while.

I grabbed my skein of Knit Picks Paint your own Lace weight merino wool and Wilton icing colors and set to work. In my mind I invisioned a beautiful skein of merino lace in a black/Christmas red/Royal blue colorway. I had a great time, not as messy as I expected, hands were colored in pretty shades of pink and purples(still are). I got so excited I totally forgot about the gloves I had on the counter. It turned out very well, not at all what I expected in the colors, but I should have thought it would be alot like cake decorating and mixing colors.

My skein of black/red/blue I had invisioned is a very cute purples/pinks/baby blues which reminds me of my recently completed Lorna's Laces "Girly Stripes" socks. I had a great time and was up till 1 am finishing my masterpiece and am totally into the owning my own spinning wheel and dyeing my own yarns. Poor hubby, he was kinda hoping I'd be satisfied in just buying ready to dye wool and just doing the coloring. Ahh well, I will be making a trip the middle of February to Shuttleworks to pick out my new spinning wheel and tons of roving!!!

Since Robert worked on Friday I missed my Knit and Knatter group so I consoled myself by popping into the other LYS on Saturday and picked up a couple of skeins of Elizabeth Lavold Silky Wool in a gorgeous Teal to make my mother in law a lace scarf. This will be my first real attempt at a lace pattern. The sales clerk also twisted my rubber arm and I purchased a set of Pony Rosewood needles, I'm such a sucker!!

On the knitting front I figured out how to knit one sock on 2 circs, tried the magic loop again and for the life of me I cannot do it. The sock on 2 circs was very easy though and I have 3 inches left on the first sock. I'll be trying the 2 socks on 2 circs next. I got a bit done on hubby's sock, I'm ready to work the heel on his first sock and he seems to like the colorway and it fits(so far). If it turns out it's to small I can always wear them, hahaha. Pics to follow.

In the mail today I received my package from Toni at The Fold and in it was 2 small skeins of Citrine, 1 skein of Cotton Candy, Spring Fling and Hornestone. Gorgeous yarns, soo soft and all in girly colors, sorry boys, no socks for you with the STR!
Now to figure out what to make and which color to start with.

Introducing the Dublin Bay Socks....(insert applause here) My first finished pair of socks of 2006!!!

They are finally finished and sooo comfy. This is the first time using Lorna's Laces and what a dream to knit with, no splitting and very soft.


So, it has been a while since my last blog, I'm finally feeling a ton better, just some minor coughing and congestion but this flu is clearing up nicely. Even my little guys are almost 100%.



My little girl,Xena came back yesterday from Portland, Oregon and brought back some ribbons she won. Here she is(the red girl) with sister Barky, and yes she is Barky. We(me) has missed her something terrible, I kinda think that was one of the reasons why I relapsed, just to much stress.

Xena won 2nd place twice(Thursday and Saturdays shows) and came in first on the final day of the show(Sunday)and also received 3 points towards her American Championship. That is what the pink ribbon is for. Hubby and I decided we are not going to pursue any championship or breed are little girl, with all the crap that goes along with it it just isn't worth it. If I want another dog down the road I'll probably get a little furball, maybe a Pekingese(yes hubby, a Pekingese).




On the knitting front, I've made little progress with hubby's socks and haven't started any new sock projects as of yet. Still debating on what my next pair will be. I'm thinking about the cascading leaves using the green knitpicks wool from Shara or just a basic sock using one of my self patterning yarns and giving the magic loop method a whirl. Probably the magic loop.





Speaking of yarn, I made a few more purchases on Friday when I went to Knit and Knatter at the LYS, than at the other LYS and Michaels craft store to finish the day.
Here's what I bought. I picked up a 100g ball of Regia Brasil color, love the colorway, a more pairs of bamboo dpns, a knitting tote and a #1 Addi 32 inch circular to go with the 24 inch I bought the week before. I also picked up a bunch of stuff for my SP, just waiting for a little something that should be here any day and I'll have this package ready to ship for Monday.

I also received another e-card from my pal today, Thank you so much SP, *waving*. She let me know there is a little something, something coming from Amazon. I wonder what it could be. This is so much fun, better than Christmas because I have no turkey to prepare and dishes to wash!

Giftees and still sick!!

This is really starting to suck, I've been sick off and on since Christmas day. I thought it was clearing up over a week ago and came back to bite me in the ass. Both of the little guys are still down with the flu as well, hubby and our oldest are feeling fine(must be nice). Does anyone have any good ways to get rid of a bad cough and nasal congestion without having to take Buckleys???? Please let me know...

My socks are in the home stretch, still... I have to finish the toe decreases on one and the rest of the foot(3 inches till decreasing) on the other. I'm hoping to finish this weekend, I just keep going into these coughing fits and can't knit long enough to see any progress.



On a brighter note, today the postlady stopped by and I got a nice package from Shara. Inside the package was 8 balls of Knit Picks Essential, I believe the big ball is the Parade from Knit Picks and a lovely card. I've been wanting to try the Knit Picks sock yarn for a while now. My little guys are asking for some striped socks and I can't wait to start a pair for myself using the green(one of my favorite colors). So much yarn so little time... You know, I think I may use the cream for a pair of fingerless mitts, since it hasn't been cold here (which is a shock) I haven't been in a rush to get them done. We have had a couple light dustings of snow but nothing that stays and it has been like this since December and I hope it stays this way too. Yes I know, I'm in Canada and I should be used to the snow but since I didn't have any on Christmas they can keep it!

Who hasn't heard of the Knitting Olympics? I, myself, do not watch the Olympics but have played numerous sports in school(15 years ago)is thinking about joining. I've been coveting a felted bag of some sort and bought 4 skeins of a really sweet handpainted Lopi wool from Painted Yarns at the LYS months ago. I'm thinking that would give me a good kick in the butt to get it done and I'll actually have something to carry my wallet in!! 16 days and big needles/yarn, could be done. I wonder if I would have to include the felting in that time too?

Quick Update

Well everyone is still sick in our household. Hubby and I have relapsed with this darn flu and we thought the little guys shrugged it off weeks ago only to be taken down this weekend with it. So much for going to Shuttleworks to check out the spinning wheels. I've sent up a temporary hospital in our livingroom, it's better than having them throw up all over the beds and I have my trusty steam vac on stand by(that was the best wedding present we received).

On the knitting front, not as much done on my socks as I would have liked. I have both going, so they will be the same size and I've turned the heel and knitted a couple rows on each for the foot. I'm starting to see the light and hopefully I'll have a fancy schmancy pair of socks for Fridays Knit and Knatter at the LYS.

On Friday I managed to sneak out for a while and get some shopping done for my SP7. Not telling what I picked up and also did a little online ordering for my pal and a little for myself(have to make it worth the shipping, that's what I tell hubby anyway). I also picked up some Red Heart Acrylic for myself, yes, I know, why would I be buying Red Heart you ask? I finally realized I'm almost out of acrylic I've been using to crochet my squares for the granny square exchange. I only picked up 3 balls of the supersaver, one white and two multi colored. Good enough for now. I didn't make it to the LYS this weekend, just Micheals, so no new sock yarn to report.

Great News!!!

There is a 95% chance I will have a spinning wheel for my Birthday!!!!! Yahhhhh!!

I made a deal with hubby this morning, I have been wanting to get another(I have 2 female daschunds already) dog, preferably a bishon/shit-zu cross or some kind of flat nosed breed ie: Pug. Hubby does not care for either, especially the Pug which he would be calling "Fugly". So, perfect time to strike a deal, I will get my spinning wheel, hopefully in February(a month early, must do some research first) and he gets no new addition to the family. Unless we decide to breed our Standard Female "Xena" which will be in 2 shows over the next month, first one is in Portland, OR (a long way from home) next weekend and the second in Calgary 2nd week of February. Lucky me her breeder, Darlene, will be doing the handling for both shows. So that is the deal. I've already emailed "Shuttleworks" asking for info on their wheels and classes I could take if purchasing a wheel from them, they are about an hour and a half away, not to bad.

Any suggestions on the type of wheel a "Beginner" should buy, please let me know.

Updating the Blog

As you can see, I have made a couple small changes with my blog (Ahhhhhhh, I couldn't stand the pink any longer). After reading 60+ blogs over the past few days gave me blog envy. You ladies/gents sure have some really nice blogs, all the buttons(with links that work) and progress bars. I decided to take the plunge and will be reconstructing my blog this week, my group of SP participants should have their partners and I can relax a little and start a little work of my own. My blog will also reflect how many blogs I do read, it just wasn't the couple I had listed on my sidebar.

Give me a week and I should be good to go(I hope)!

Hi SP (*wave*) and WIP's

Just want to give a shout out to my Secret Pal *waving*.

Being one of the hostesses for SP7 is turning out to be alot of fun. I like having the blogs to read and getting to know everyone in my group as well as those participating in the event. I hope everyone has a great time and makes some new friends out in Blogland, I know I am. I'm actually starting to come out of my shell a bit when it comes to chatting in my yahoo groups and stuff.

Now onto some knitting, I was able to do a 12 rows on my Dublin Bay sock but had to frog back 8 because I shorted a stitch, what a pain. It is a simple lace pattern and very small to boot but heck if I can get it straight. Thinking to much about the SP7 event I guess, making my list of things to get my SP whom I almost forgot to email in all this excitement. Some SP I'm going to make this round if I can't even email my own pal!

Back to knitting, I'm going to cast on for a pair of socks for hubby, he still hasn't received any so he's picked some black multi colored yarn from Sock it to me from Elann. I'm going to try it on a circular needle(just one sock on one circular) but won't try the toe up yet. I'd like to get some work done on my blanket as well and the shawl for my aunt has been frogged. Just wasn't doing it for me so I have some Elizabeth Lavold silky wool(blue) set aside for a Branching Out scarf for her. I will tackle that next month once things calm down here abit.

Right now I'm in the process of reorganizing some rooms in the house. We have just put together one that is the computer/entertainment/yarn storage room. I have a big white cupboard that will be housing some/most of my stash instead of it being spread out through out the house in totes, bags from the store and the big Ziploc bags. Hubby was having a hard time getting to the closet in our bedroom for his clothes, wading through 4 XL ziploc bags full of yarn.

1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer higher quality and/or natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand?
I do prefer higher quality/natural fibers for my socks(haven't knit a sweater yet) but I still use the Red Heart and Lionbrand for some of the kids stuff and for my exchanges.
2. Do you spin? Crochet?
I crochet, and would love to learn how to spin(I'm trying to talk hubby into buying a spinning wheel for my B-day, he thinks I'm taking this knitting thing a little to seriously, lol)
3. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
Right now I'm using a black plastic toolbox hubby bought.
4. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I have been knitting since I was 10(24 looong years) off and on. I've been a serious (intermediate)knitter for the last 4 years.
5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
As a matter of fact I do have an Amazon list.
6. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
Vanilla, baking smells, soft flowery scents, nothing strong.

Ohh, just a few, also a couple or dozen milk chocolate teeth as well. Favorite candy would be anything cherry flavored.
8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
I paint lead/metal fantasy miniatures(like on Cool Mini), sew, and quilt.

80's music, some 60's, Alanis, Coldplay, Billy Talent, Theory of a Deadman, Sum 41, anything but rap/dance(especially Brittany). Don't mind the new Kelly Clarkson.

My favorite colors are Dark purples(light as well) greens, blues and reds. I love pastels for socks, well just about anything fun and multi colored for socks except fluorescents.

I am married to my best friend, Robert and we have 3 boys, 15, 5 and 3(4 in April). We also share our home with 2 little girls, Barky(mini daschund) and Xena(standard daschund).

I do wear scarves, hats and mittens.

I love handpainted/self-striping sockyarns(fingering weight)I'd like to try as many different brands as I can but limited to what I can get here. Lucky me I can always order online ;-)

Anything scratchy, there are some soft acrylics out there I usually use for my swaps and stuff.

Socks, cables(just learned a few weeks ago), making scarves and did I mention Socks!!

Mmmm, that is a tought one, I would have to say Socks for my boys and just started a pair for myself.

To many things, Dublin Bay socks in Lorna's Laces for me, Blanket for me, Irish Hiking scarf-me, and a cable scarf for hubby.

Love handmades, especially Christmas related

Right now it's straight, haven't used circs that often except the blanket I have going.

Batman(love Christian Bale), Spiderman(animated) and Marge Simpson(we have alot in common) and for animals I would have to go with dogs.

My name is Tammy and I am a yarnaholic.

I did it again, I enhanced the stash. One good thing the 5 balls of Astra Lip Pink are not for me, they are for my Aunt Margaret. Stash enhancement includes 2 skeins of Briggs and Little Tuffy, Blue Jean#91, Galway Heather worsted #620 deep red(I have been wanting to purchase this and try it out for a while and it is now avaliable at our LYS) and last but not least we have a ball of On Line Supersocke 100 Fun Color blue colorway. Now for accessories, we have Chibi needles, I was going to purchase just a regular pack of wool needles when Judy owner of Needlecraft cupboard showed me her Chibi in action. I don't know about you but my wool needles tend to grow feet and walk away. I've purchased alot of needles since I have started knitting again. We also have a set of straight cable needles, US2 Bamboo needles(I was their for Brittany Birch which they don't carry) but did substitute with(drum roll please)1-US#1 Addi Turbo circular needle, 24"long for a go at Magic Loop(one of my New Years Resolutions-to learn as many knitting techniques as possible). I sure do hope I knit faster with that Addi, I'm starting to get what the stash of sock yarn that I should deal with. I'm thinking we will go on a small yarn diet for the next 2 weeks, but that doesn't include needles. I'm seeing Brittany Birch in my future, hehehe.

The whole reason for going to the LYS yesterday was attend the "Knit and Knatter" at the Needlecraft Cupboard. I've been to shy to go before, I'd pop in during that time and do some shopping and talk to the ladies but never stay and knit. So, the other day on the Townsend Socks Knit Along yahoo group I met Mary and she is from Lethbridge as well. She knows no other local knitters and has been a little shy as well about going to these groups on Tuesday and Friday. We agreed to meet yesterday morning and it was alot of fun. I learned the German Twist cast on and seen Mary doing the magic loop method for her socks she was working on and I'm going to cast on for hubby's socks sometime this weekend. He's been wondering when he's going to get his socks and he even picked out his yarn a black/grey/white yarn(Elann's Sock it to me), not sure if it self striping though.
I will definetely be attending more of the Knit and Knatters in the future and hubby's going to try to take one Tuesday off a month so I can go to the Tuesday morning session and the Tuesday evening Sock Knitting chat group at Knitting Time.

First FO of the New Year and more yarn..

I finally finished my little guys socks Tuesday night. For some strange reason I could not finish them, second sock syndrome? I don't know, but all I had to do was 3 inches and bind off. Maybe it was because I ran out of yarn on the toes!!! Here they are pictured with a flyer I got Tuesday which just happened to be under they ball of yarn I was using. No need to panic, I had a second ball, I'm lucky kiddy socks only take 50grams.

Now that they are done I can move back into some serious sock knitting for myself. I'm starting a pair of Dublin Bay socks for myself. I had a great time making Shara's sock I now have to have a pair of my own. I'm using Lorna's Laces sock yarn in the Girly Stripe I picked up a couple of months ago from Kpixie. I have the cuff done and moving onto the leg and here they are:

This is a very nice yarn to work with, the pattern calls for 2.25mm needles but since I am such a tight sock knitter(don't want any ladders) I'm using 2.5mm.

And now onto wool purchases. I am going to be the proud new owner of 4 skeins of "Socks that Rock" merino wool from "The Fold", check it out. There has been such a rage about this sock yarn and wonderful colors, handpainted, gotta love that. 4 skeins(1 is enough to make a pair of adult socks)at 25% off I came in under $50 bucks including shipping to Canada!!!!!Sweeeeeet...;-) I have Hornstone, Cotton Candy, Spring fling and 2 small Citrine(measuring 400 yds) but billed as 325yd skein. Thanks Toni, can't wait to start knitting.

Must Buy More Yarn!!!!!!

Ok, I'm convinced that this whole Yarn Diet thing is not good for my health. It is causing way too much stress!

I'm apart of the Townsend Sockknitters group and Sockknitters groups and they have ad days. "Socks that Rock" is all the rage right now and I need to buy some, I've been watching all the requests and she's selling off the older(325g) skeins 25% off. Now come on who in their right mind could resist that kind of sale, handpainted to boot. I gave in to temptation and placed my order for 5 skeins and hubby sayed I can go on a good shopping spree at the end of the month. With that being said I have been online looking for 1 store in which I can spend my wad of dough(save on shipping). I think I'll be going with "The Knitter.com" since it has Trekking XXl, Bearfoot, Cherry Tree Hill just to name a few and all I have not tried/or have in my stash. Yes, I'm going all high end sock yarn, preferably handpainted.

Stash Enhancement

I forget to tell you about my stash enhancement on New Year's Eve.

It had been a month since my last yarn purchase so I popped into one of the LYS's I know carries some handspun/handpainted yarns. Didn't have anything that tickled my fancy but I did pick up a package of 2 row counters(I keep losing my sticky notes), a ball of Noro Silk Garden(I've been coveting for a long time for fingerless mittens) in a blue colorway #234, Fortissma 100g in a purple colorway #2416 (socks for me) and 1 skein of Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool Dark Blue #32 for a Branching Out Scarf for my Aunt Margaret. This will be my first attempt at the Branching Out Scarf. Total damage for a quick yarn fix, just under $50.


Here's a couple pics of my Irish Hiking Scarf and the Charcoal Woolease is Rob's scarf I just cast on this afternoon. The Woolease is so chunky I adjusted the pattern so it's one cable, 6 stitches and 6 on each side. It's turning out very well and working up fast. I was feeling a little blah, craving a coke and some chocolate I decided start Rob's scarf. Craving has passed and it is now supper time. Chicken, rice and veggies are ready. Post Christmas Carnage and New Year Resolutions

Well it has been a while since my last post and alot has happened since the 19th of December, 2005. My 2nd son, Justice had his 5th birthday on the 21st. We had a small family party for him, had his favorite takeout food "BK", a Spongebob brownie cake and giftees for the little man. I can't believe he is 5 years old, wow, where did all the time go. Here's a few pics of him and Collin with the cake & gifts. When all was said and done it went pretty well.

We put up and decorated the tree on the 22nd, I decided to omit most of my store bought Christmas decorations this year and go with mostly handcrafted ornaments. I normally have a ton of glass ornaments but now that I'm getting a little older(oh how I dread it) and doing more crafts than I did when I was younger I am going more with a "country style theme". I even had a cute little sheep on my tree to represent my knitting, who knows maybe next year will be little balls of wool.

Christmas eve was a tad hectic, I did my usual last minute sewing, managed to finish a pair of flannel PJ's for Collin and they turned out great(have to make a few more pairs).

Christmas morning the little guys found Santa's footprints starting at the door to the tree and it was sooo funny. They thought I was still sleeping and they were having a discussion whether or not it was Santa that made those footprints. Rob made them by sprinkling baking soda around a sandal, voila, Magical Footprints! I received a 3 1/2 foot tall Batman from Hubby, yes, you are probably wondering why would you get a Batman from your Hubby. I have to admit I am somewhat of a "geek", I love alot of the comic book movies even though I have never read them, I play table top wargames,paint fantasy lead/steel/plastic miniatures and I'm an online gamer who also loves to knit, crochet, sew, quilt and would love to learn to spin and learn as many fibre related crafts as humanly possible. I did get some knitting related goodies in my stocking, knitting needles, cable needle, beading supplies to make more stitch markers and some cotton yarn for dishcloths and a Handknit sweater from my dear Aunt Margaret(my very first one). Pics to follow, blogger is not playing nice. I managed to get sick Christmas day, that horrible flu that was going around took me out for the week. I'm finally feeling better but still have the lingering cough.

Onto New Years Resolutions, I found out on Thursday I have pre-diabetes and a slow thyroid. This does expain why I've been feeling like crap and why my foot is always sore(not diabetes related but thyroid related). Gosh, I feel like Humpty Dumpty sitting on the wall, waiting to fall off and have Type 2 Diabetes if I don't straighten out my eating habits. My doctor sent me in again on Friday to get retested since I've been sick and haven't been able to keep much down and haven't had sugar for almost a week, lost 10 lbs, he thinks it might make some difference with the pre-diabetes. Cross your fingers. Since receiving this news I am making a concious effort to watch my sugar intake. No more 2 cokes a day, or the jug of juice, or over-indulging in the chocolate, especially when I'm feeling down. Instead when I feel like falling off the wagon I will start a new project or buy some yarn. Hubby is ok with the plan, for some strange reason he doesn't see my buying yarn as a bad thing. Funny, if I was him I would since my yarn has a bad habit of making its way into the dining room, living room or any other room. Check out Craftylosers if you are crafty and want to lose weight.

Oh well, so on the needles we have the mate to Justice's sock, toes left, hopefully I will get to that today since my yarn stores are Closed. Damn them, Thankfully ebay is open so I bought 12 balls of Patons Kroy in assorted colors for myself and 4 balls for my aunt Margaret. As if I need more sock yarn, hehehe. I have Jordan's socks started, started the Irish Hiking Scarf the other day, first time knitting cables and wow, it is going great and it is easy, I wish I would have tried it sooner. I'm using my Mission Hills yarn, frogged hubby's scarf from the Nov.24 post. I just didn't like the way it looked and I had bought some Woolease "Charcoal" just before Xmas and he said he wouldn't mind having a scarf in that color.
